The basics
What is PrEP?
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is a prescription medication taken daily by HIV-negative people to prevent HIV infection. When taken consistently, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%.
PrEP is recommended for anyone who is at higher risk of HIV — including gay and bisexual men, transgender women, people with an HIV-positive partner, and anyone who does not consistently use condoms with partners of unknown HIV status.
